それ！ケルトの祭りハロウィーンだ：かがり火焚いて、悪霊払え！ (BBC-News, October 27, 2016)
子ども達が魔女の格好をして、「Trick or treat.(いたずらか、いいものー)」と叫んで近所の家々を回り、お菓子をねだるハロウィーーン (Halloween)。Hallow は「聖人」の意で、Halloween は「All Hallows' Eve (諸聖人の祝日の前夜祭)」とも呼ばれる。
10 月 31日は、古代ケルト暦では1年の終わりの日であり、「Samhain (サーウィン) の祭り」が、ケルト系の民族の住むアイルランドやスコットランドで盛大に行なわれた。
さらにこの日の夜は魔女の宴会が開かれるとされ、村の若者の悪ふざけ (trick) も大目に見られた。
"Gate were removed and hidden in ditches and even cows were moved between crofts so that by moaning you never new where to find your cattle."
[ よその敷地の門を外して、溝に隠したり、囲いの中の牛を放したりの悪さのお陰で、朝になるまで、牛がどこに行ったのか、みんな、皆目見当も付かなかった。]
"It was at this time that it was believed the dead could return to the earth so at that time you went out masked to scare the evil spirits and having a light would also help to keep you safe,"
"It was a custom that bonfires were it also to scare the evil spirits."
[ また、この日は、死者が地上に戻ってくると信じられ、悪霊を追い払うため、みんなマスクを被り、手にはたいまつを持って外出した。]
[ さらに、かがり火を焚いて、悪霊を追い払うのが、当時の習慣だった。]
そのかがり火の小型版が「カブ (turnip, swede, or neep)」をくり抜いて作った「灯り(lanterns)」。 Highland & Islands大学の Donna Heddle 教授によると、
"This is a very old tradition in Scotland and Ireland based on will o' the wisps as Celtic mythology which settlers and emigrants took to the USA, not really finding neeps, used pumpkins."
[ この祭りは、ウィルオウスブ(鬼火)とケルト神話に基づいて実施されたスコットランドとアイルランドの極めて古い伝統。その伝統行事が入植者や移民によってアメリカにもたらされたが、かの地ではカブが全く手に入らなかったので、カボチャで代用された。]
"The whole Halloween celebration today has been taken over by the US version which bears no resemblance to ours."
[ 今日、全てのハロウィーン祭りはアメリカ版で行なわれているが、それはスコットランドの祭りと似て非なるもの。]
カボチャ (pumpkins) ではなく、カブ (turnip) をキッチン・ナイフとスプーンでくり抜いて作る、ケルトの伝統的な「灯り (lanterns)」は、カブが硬いため、その制作が大変だったという。
