「Paris (パリ)」から高速列車 TGVに乗って南に約2時間。古代ローマ人が築いた都市「Lyon (リヨン)」に到着する。そこには古代ローマ人で賑わったと思われる石造りの円形劇場や石畳の古い街並み、丘の上に建つ「Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière (フルヴィエール大聖堂)」からの眺めなど、見所はいっぱい。UNESCO の世界遺産に登録されている地だ。
その Lyonで、奇跡が起こった。
「The Institut des Sciences Cognitives Marc Jeannerod (マルク・ジャンニュロー認知科学研究所)」の Ms Angela Sirigu らの研究チームが、脳外科の分野で奇跡のような、画期的な成果を挙げた。
交通事故で意識を失い、15年間「vegetative state(植物状態)」であったフランス人の男性 (35歳)が「Vagal neuro stimulation, VNS (迷走神経刺激法)」と呼ばれる電気刺激を受けて、意識を取り戻したのだ。治療を始めてからわずか 1ヶ月のことだったと言う。
この治療法は、患者の胸部に「Nerve stimulator (電気刺激発生装置)」を埋め込み、そこから直接、脳内の「vagal nerve (迷走神経)」に電気刺激を与える方法だ。
"The vagus nerve connects the brain to many parts of the body and helps control automatic or subconscious functions, including alertness and wakefulness."
[ 迷走神経は体の(首から腹部に至る)広い範囲に分布し、警戒、覚醒を含む無意識あるいは潜在意識的な(知覚や内臓の運動・分泌)機能を支配している。]
これまで、15年間も昏睡状態が続き、まったく反応を示さなかった男が、セラピストの本を読む声に目を開き、担当医師が顔を近づけると、驚いて目を大きく見開くようになった。自分で頭の向きを変え、目で物を追えるようにようにまで回復した。これは、全て、男の母親の記録。短い文章ながら、その喜び・うれしさが読む人に伝わってくる。
この成果を受けて、Ms Sirigu は、次のように語る。
"Brain plasticity and brain repair are still possible even hope seems to have vanished."
[ たとえ望みが消え失せたと思っても、脳神経の可塑性も脳の修復の可能性も残されている。]
なお、以下は「Vegetative State (植物状態)」の定義。
1. A vegetative state is when a person is awake without signs of awareness; they may open their eyes, wake up and fall asleep at regular intervals and have basic reflexes; they can also regulate their heartbeat and breathing without assistance.
2. A person in a vegetable state does not show any meaningful responses, such as following an object with their eyes or responding to voices; they also show no signs of experiencing emotions.
3．A continuing - or persistent - vegetative state is when this happens for more than four weeks.
4．A permanent vegetative state is defined as more than six months if caused by a non-traumatic brain injury or more than 12 months if caused by a traumatic brain injury such as a blow to the head.
5．If a person is in a* permanent vegetative state, recovery is extremely unlikely but not impossible.
1．植物状態とは、生存していても、意識の兆候が認められず、「目を開ける」、「目を覚ます」、「眠る」のパターンが規則的に繰り返され、基本的な反射神経を有する患者、あるいは、心拍・呼吸が、介護補助装置を付けなくとも安定している患者の症状。
2．植物状態の患者は、何ら意味ある反応を示さず、目で物を追うことや、呼ぶ声に応えることも、心の中の感情を表わすこともできない。
3．連続性または遷延性植物状態とは、上記の症状が4週間以上続くことを指す。
4．持続的植物状態とは、上記の症状が非外傷性脳損傷の患者で6ヶ月以上、頭部に打撃を受けた外傷性脳損傷の患者で12ヶ月以上続くことを指す。
5．持続的植物状態の患者では、回復の可能性は極めて低い。しかし､全く不可能 (ゼロ)ではない。
