不可思議な人間社会では、奇妙なことが起こる。地球の温暖化にも、不可解な現象が現われた。大気中の CO2濃度が 400 ppmを越え、世界中の森林は減少の一途をたどる。これでは、地球温暖化にますます加速が掛かるのではと、誰もが戦々兢々とした。
ところが、「Nature Communications」に発表された Dr Trevor Keenan らの論文には、驚く。過去 50年間にわたる大気中の CO2 増加率 (growth rate) を分析した結果、この十数年 (2002-2014)、CO2 の伸びは、それ以前に比べて鈍っていることが分かったというのだ。
それは一体なぜなのか。科学者は次のように説明する。
"Over the past 50 years, the amount of absorbed by the Earth's oceans, plants and vegetation has doubled and these carbon sinks now account for about 45% of the gas emitted each year because of human activities."
[ 過去 50年の間に、大気中から海洋と植物が吸収する CO2 量は2倍に膨れ上がった。その吸収量は、人間の活動に由来する年間 CO2 排出量の 45%に相当する。]
"We have a huge amount of vegetation on the Earth and that wa being firtilised by CO2 and taking in more CO2 as result."
[ 地球上には膨大な植生が存在する。それらが濃度の高いCO2のお陰で成長が促されて繁茂し、結果として大気中の CO2 をさらに吸収するようになった。]
さらに、1998ｰ2012 年にかけて起きた「hiatus in global temperature increase(地球温暖化の上げ止まり)」も要因として挙げられる。
"The soil and ecosystem are respiring so as temperatures increase they respire more, releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere."
"In the past decade or so there hasn't been much of an increase in global temperatures, so that meant there wasn't much of an increase in respiration and carbon release so that was fundamental different in the past decade or so compared to previous periods."
[ 土壌や生態系は、気温が上がれば上がるほどその呼吸の勢いを増し、大気中にはたくさんの CO2 を放出するようになる。]
[ 過去十数年間、地球の温度は、それほど上がらなかった。このことは、生態系の呼吸が低めに留まり、CO2 放出量も抑えられたことを意味する。それは、基本的に10数年前あるいはそれ以前に比べて、違ったものだった。
しかし、研究者は次のように締めくくる。
"The pause in the growth of atmospheric carbon will almost certainly be a temporary phenomenon. As temperatures rise, these green sinks could in fact become sources of CO2."
[ 大気中における CO2 増加率の停滞が一時的な現象であることは、ほぼ確実だ。気温が上がるにつれて、植物相に取り込まれた CO2 は、いつか、事実上の新たな CO2 の発生源となりかねない。]
植物 (florae) は人に癒 し(comfort) を与えてくれる。そればかりか、地球まで癒し(healing) てくれていたとは、まさに救い主だ。荒れた人間社会に送られた宇宙の使いだったのかも知れない。
