都市の樹木:それは市民の健康の守り神 (BBC-Science & Environment, October 31, 2016)

 世の中には、鴨 (dabblers) や雉 (pheasants)、山鳩 (doves) などを鉄砲で撃ち落としては、得意満面に自慢する人もいれば、チェーンソーで木立の木々を切るのが趣味の人もいる。
 それは、その人の個性に違いないが、随分と近視眼的な (short-sighted eye) 人間の振るまいとあきれる。

"Although trees have long been part of urban life, either by design or consumed by expanding urban, they had been sidelined in the second half of the 20th Century."
[ 現在、樹木は都市設計で取り入れられたり、もともと在った山林が、拡大する都市に吸収されて、都市の暮らしの一部になっているが、20世紀の後半の頃は、(じゃまなものとして)脇に追いやられていた。]

 ところが、アメリカ「The National Conservancy (自然保護協会)」が発表した報告書によると、

"London's trees provided 'at least £133 million of benefits every year in terms of air pollution removal, carbon sequestration and reducing the amount of water going into drains."

[ ロンドン市内の樹木は、その大気汚染物質の除去や二酸化炭素隔離、大量の雨水の貯留機能の働きで、少なくとも年間 £133M (\169億)に値する利益を市民に供与している。]

"The average reduction of particulate matter near a tree is between 7-24%, while the cooling effect is up to 2C (3.6F)."

[ 木の近くでは、大気汚染の粒子状物質PMが平均 7 - 24%も減少し、2℃の冷却効果も期待できる。]

 したがって、都市の緑化は、大気汚染対策として「cost-effective way (費用効率の優れた方法)」ということになる。
 なお、報告書では、今後、2050年まで毎年、大気中の粒子状物質が原因で、620万人が命を失うと推定する。

 街の木々は、何も言わずに立っている。しかし、実は、そこに住む人々の健康を気づかい、人々の生活をかばうように生きているのだ。
