あの、校庭のブナの木：いつまでも、そこにいて！ (BBC-News, October 26, 2016)
木は何も言わない。時々、風に吹かれては、その葉を揺らし、秋の淡い日の光を静かに浴びて、そこにジッと立っているだけ。
しかし、確かに、木は、周りに集 (つど) う子ども達や小鳥と一緒に時を過ごし、人の心をしっかりと感じ取っているようにも思える。
スコットランド南東部「East Lothian (イースト・ロージアン)」の小学校「Prestonpans Primary School」の校庭には、大きな「copper beech (銅ブナ)」の木が、何世代にもわたって立って来た。子ども達はみんな、この木の周りで遊ぶ「tig games (鬼ごっこ)」が大好き。この木にタッチしては「Ding Dong (カラン、コロン)」と叫んだ。それで、いつしか、この銅ブナの木は「The Ding Dong Tree」と呼ばれるようになったという。
この度、スコットランド政府主催の 2016年「Scottish Tree of the Year」コンテストでみごと一位の栄冠に輝いたのは「The Ding Dong Tree」。
「The Woodland Trust of Scotland (スコットランド森林トラスト)」の Mr George Anderson によると、
"The Ding Dong Tree is on the face of it quite an ordinary copper beech, but it has found a special place in the hearts of the school community."
[ ディン・ドンの木は、見たところ、ごく普通の銅ブナ。しかし、それはスクール・コミュニテｨのまっただの特別な場所に立っている。]
"The Ding Dong Tree is such an integral part of the schools life that it has been described as 'almost an extra member of staff' as it has been the subject of so many science and art projects"
[ ディン・ドンの木は、プレストンパンズ小学校にとって、なくてはならない存在。この木は理科や図工のプロジェクトに何度も利用され、ほとんど特別教育スタッフのように扱われてきた。]
"Its canopy makes it an ideal outdoor classroom, and it has also been credited with bringing particular calm to children with complex emotions."
[ また、木の葉が織りなす緑の傘の下は、理想的な屋外授業の場であり、ときに悩みを抱えた子ども達にとっては、心の安らぎを与えてくれる場所として親しまれてきた。]
なお、表彰式は「Scottish Parliament (スコットランド国会議事堂)」で開催され、今後の「The Ding Dong Tree」の維持管理費として、£1,000 (約\128,000 円) が贈与される。
ちなみに、受賞候補 (nominees) として挙がった木は、次のとおり。
・Renfrewshire に立つ樹齢 700年のイチイ (yew) の巨木
・自転車を飲み込んだ Trossachs のセイヨウカシカエデ (sycamore)
・South Queensferry に近い Hopetoun Estate 内のヒマラヤトウヒ (Himalayan spruce)の巨木
・Niel Gow がその木の下で著名なリール(reels) を作曲した「Perthshireのオーク(oak)」
・Shakespeare の Macbeth に登場し、中世のオークの生き残りとされる「The Birnam Oak」
