世間のうわさの信憑性を巡って､「火のないところに煙は立たぬ (There 's no smoke without fire.)」と、よく言われる。
イギリスでは、今、UFO (未確認飛行物体)の「うわさ」でもちきりだ。この数週間、三角形の不思議な物体 (Flying Dorito) が目撃され、写真まで撮られた。場所はイングランドの中央部に位置し､Wales に接する Shropshire (シュロップシャー) の小さな町Wen (ウェン)。さらに、同じ州の Telford の The Wrekin (レッキンの丘)」でも UFO が目撃された。
「The Shropshire Paranormal and UFO Society (シュロップシャー超常現象･UFO協会)」のMr Christian Delaneyが言うことには、
"I've seen something yellow that looked like a cigar do a figure of eight over the Wrekin for three or four minutes getting faster and faster."
[ 私が目撃したのはタバコのような飛行物体。それがレッキンの丘の上を 3､4分間「8の字型」に飛行したかと思うと、ドンドン、スピードを上げて飛び去った。]
また、ある Shawbury の気象官 (meteorological officer) も「巨大な三角形の飛行物体(vast triangular-shaped craft)」を目撃し、次のように記録している。
"Frying slowly over the base, making a low-frequency humming sound, before suddenly accelerating away, many times faster than a military jet."
[ グェングェンと低周波の音を立てながら、ショウベリー空軍基地の上をゆっくりと飛行した後、突然加速し、戦闘機より何倍も早いスピードで飛び去った。]
「Former UFO investigator for the Ministry of Defense (元イギリス国防省UFO調査官)」の Mr Nick Pope は
"Aircraft lights, weather balloons, meteors, satellites and Chinese lanterns can be mistaken for UFOs."
"People really do want to think there's something out there. Additionally, people's mistrust of government fuels conspiracy theories, and the idea that the authorities are covering up the truth about UFOs is a popular one."
[ 飛行機の照明、気象観測用の気球、人工衛星、灯りをともした風船も、UFO として間違えられる。]
[ 人は、空に何か飛んでいると強く思いがちだ。加えて、政府が信用されていないことも、陰謀説に油を注いでいる。当局が UFO に関する実際の情報を隠しているとする説が、巷(ちまた)に広まっているのだ。]
Mr Pope は、UFO に見えたものとして、戦闘爆撃機「Avro Vulcan」か「B2 Stealth bomber」、「Rutin VariEze」も考えられるが、「genuine UFO (本物のUFO)」の可能性も捨て切れない、と述べた後、続けて、
"I should say that there's no smoke without fire, and that while the sceptics have to right every day, the believers only have to be right once."
[ 指摘して置きたいことは、「火のないところに煙が立たない」ということ。同時に、政府を信じる人は、一度納得すれば済むが、疑い深い人は、毎日納得しなければ気が済まないこと。]
